Harihar Fort: A Gateway to Ancient Trade Routes

Dating back to the Seuna (Yadava) dynasty between the 9th and 14th centuries, Harihar Fort was strategically constructed to safeguard the ancient trade routes passing through the Gonda Ghat, which connected the commercial hubs of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Over the centuries, control of this architectural masterpiece shifted between the Ahmadnagar Sultanate, the Marathas, and the Mughals, before it was eventually surrendered to the British in 1818.

Trek Highlights & Must-See Attractions:

  • The Iconic 80-Degree Rock-Cut Steps: The absolute highlight of the trek. You will climb 117 steep, hand-carved stone steps angled at a nerve-racking 75 to 80 degrees. The ancient builders thoughtfully carved small grooves (niches) on both sides of the rock face to act as handholds as you navigate the vertical ladder.

  • The Crawling Trap Door & Rock Tunnel: After surviving the first exposed staircase, the trail passes beneath a sheer rock overhang and takes you through a winding, helical tunnel carved directly inside the mountain, leading up to a narrow, easily defensible entrance door.

  • Scottish Kada: A dramatic, vertical cliff drop on the fort’s western face that plunges nearly 170 meters into the valley below. It gets its name from legendary Himalayan mountaineer Doug Scott, who famously conquered this sheer rock wall in 1986.

  • The Summit Plateau: Once at the top, the tension melts away. You’ll find a serene tapering plateau housing a small storage palace, a collection of 8 rock-cut water cisterns, a pristine stone pond, and small shrines dedicated to Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva.
