Naneghat & Kukdeshwar Temple: An Ancient Monsoon Escapade

Located in the scenic Junnar region of the Pune district, Maharashtra, this trek blends historical exploration with natural monsoon wonders. Naneghat, an ancient mountain pass, was a vital trade route connecting the Konkan sea coast to the Deccan plateau. The name itself tells its story: “Nane” means coin and “ghat” means pass, as it historically served as a toll booth for traders. Today, it is famously known for its gravity-defying reverse waterfall and historic rock-cut caves. The expedition also takes you to the 12th-century Kukdeshwar Temple, nestled along the Kukdi River in Pur village. Built in the classic Hemadpanthi architectural style, it offers a beautiful display of ancient Indian craftsmanship.

Trek Highlights & Must-See Attractions:

  • The Famous Reverse Waterfall: Witness one of the Sahyadris’ most spectacular monsoon phenomena. Strong upward monsoon winds push the cascading water back into the sky, creating a mesmerizing reverse waterfall at the Nanacha Angtha (Thumb Peak) viewpoint.

  • Ancient Naneghat Caves: Explore the rock-cut caves that once served as resting spots for ancient traders over 2,000 years ago. You can also discover historical Satavahana-era inscriptions carved directly into the stone walls.

  • Kukdeshwar Temple: Visit this beautiful 12th-century Shiva temple constructed out of solid basalt rock. It features stunning, intricate sculptures and carvings that transport you back in time.

  • Breathtaking Valley Panoramas: Enjoy sweeping, misty views of Jivdhan Fort, the sprawling Malshej Ghat region, and lush green valleys from the top of the mountain pass.
