Padmadurg Fort & Janjira

Padmadurg, also known as Kasa Fort, was built by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1676. Located approximately 4 kilometers northwest of Janjira Fort, Padmadurg was part of Shivaji’s strategic initiative to challenge the Siddis’ control over Janjira. The fort served as a naval base and shipbuilding center for the Maratha navy. Today, visitors can reach Padmadurg by boat from Murud-Koliwada, offering a glimpse into the Maratha empire’s maritime history.

Murud-Janjira, often simply called Janjira Fort, is renowned for its robust architecture and history of remaining unconquered despite numerous attempts by various powers, including the Portuguese, British, and Marathas. Constructed in the 17th century by Malik Ambar, the Abyssinian minister of the Sultan of Ahmednagar, the fort stands on an island near the coastal town of Murud. Its oval shape and 19 rounded bastions have withstood the test of time, symbolizing the fort’s resilience.
